Red Dirt And Round Bales

Tulsa Gave Bob Wills His Sound

Episode Summary

Bob Wills arrived in Oklahoma looking for another opportunity. Tulsa gave him one — and helped give American music western swing. In this episode of Red Dirt and Round Bales, Dave Deken follows Wills from Texas into Oklahoma City and eventually Tulsa, where a midnight trial broadcast on KVOO in 1934 turned into a regular radio program. The signal carried his blend of fiddle music, jazz, blues, steel guitar, popular music and Southwestern influences into farmhouses, ranch homes and small towns across the region. Cain’s Ballroom soon became the Texas Playboys’ headquarters and provided the dance floor that matched the music. The result was a distinct American sound shaped by radio, rural traditions, big-band influences and the social culture of Oklahoma dance halls.
