Red Dirt And Round Bales

Oklahoma Movies: What Hollywood Gets Right

Episode Summary

Hollywood has been telling stories about Oklahoma for more than a century, but the Oklahoma seen on screen is usually a mixture of history, stereotype and movie-making. In this episode of Red Dirt and Round Bales, Dave Deken looks at five familiar examples: Oklahoma!, True Grit, Far and Away, The Grapes of Wrath and Twister. Each borrowed something recognizable from the state — frontier change, Indian Territory law enforcement, land openings, Dust Bowl migration or severe weather — while also bending geography or history to make a better movie. Some productions did not even film Oklahoma in Oklahoma. Others, especially Twister, used actual Oklahoma roads, fields and skies. The result is a useful look at the difference between historical truth and the images that helped shape America's idea of Oklahoma.
