Red Dirt And Round Bales

Electrifying Oklahoma: Farms Join the Grid

Episode Summary

Electric lights reached most Oklahoma towns well before they reached the farms surrounding them. In this episode of Red Dirt and Round Bales, Dave Deken looks back at a time when rural families still depended on kerosene lamps, hand-pumped water and muscle for jobs that electricity would eventually transform. The problem was not the technology — it was the distance between customers. Farmers and rural residents responded by organizing cooperatives, signing up neighbors, donating rights of way and helping clear routes for power lines. Federal Rural Electrification Administration loans then gave those member-owned cooperatives the financing needed to build. When electricity finally traveled down Oklahoma dirt roads, it brought much more than lights. Pumps, refrigerators, washing machines, hot water, brooders and powered equipment fundamentally changed rural life and farm productivity.
